Mr. November

Our First Gap Guy post!

Shawn, one of our very own at 9402, is wearing the men's plaid pocket button down under the ultra soft Merino V-neck Sweater. When layering sweaters like this it's important to pick colors that will compliment the shirt worn underneath.  Avoid being too "matchy matchy" with the same colors on bottom and top, unless you're going for something ironic in which case you win!

This look is casual enough to be worn everyday of fall/winter, but can also be dressed up with slacks and/or a blazer.

The straight fit cords, add subtle texture to the look making it more interesting and definitely more stylish

Being a gentleman never goes out of style (especially when you're well dressed).

Trend Spotting: The Always Skinny Dark Wash

These jeans have been spotted throughout retail stores and online shopping sites. The Gap 1969 jean has the perfect dark wash that is a staple in every wardrobe; the a rich, cool color is suiting for the winter months! These skinny jeans look great with winter boots and the dark wash is versatile enough to be dressed up or down . Compared to more expensive designer jeans, the Always Skinny is equal in fit and quality. Pair with a puffer vest to fight off the cold, or for a more glamourous look, a fur coat!

Fall Wardrobe

+ Alexander Wang

Fall is one of the best times of the year becomes of the mild temperatures and gorgeous array of color.  Let your environment inspire you! Play with colors and neutrals. Worn with heels or flats this is a quite a versatile look. Especially given that here at 9402 we've been seeing the warmer side of fall, a skirt paired with a thick sweater is a stylish way to deal with unpredictable autumn weather!

Fall Ready to Wear

Favorite Looks from Gap's RTW '11 collection via Style.com:

Love the work done with faux leather: the pants, the dress, the leggings. Paired with simple neutral basics like the moto fleece jacket softens the 'rocker' style of leather pieces.

While leather can be a great addition to add edgy style to a look, it is sometimes best left to accessories. In a word (or three) user discretion advised!

Interview Attire

The tie neck, sleeveless blouse from summer '11 worn with a blue crewneck sweater and blue & white tweed skirt.  This look has a lot of text from the tweed skirt to the cotton blend sweater, it is perfectly paired with a light weight top that adds a touch of androgyny and femininity with the bow-tie.

Small like the matching back zipper add extra embellishment without being over the top.

Black pony hair flats complete the look, adding another sample of understated texture and creating a classic look. The 'smoking slipper' is a particular style that is becoming a huge trend and can be worn to dress a look up or down, and are a particularly refreshing style of flats compared to the standard ballerina flat.

Wearing a skirt to an interview is great, but the proper length is essential. Since this skirt is above the knee wearing it with solid stockings would be ideal.  Also wearing flats as opposed to heels gives a more modest professional look with a shorter skirt. And it goes without saying that mini skirts (which we have seen take a back seat to midi and full lengths this year) are definitely out for interviews. Here's to getting the job!

How can I wear that summer dress in fall?

'How can I wear that summer dress in fall', you ask?  Gap Girl knows it's hard to part with some of your favorite summer pieces like this satin trim dress. The best part is, you don't have to.  With the right layering and color combinations you can take your summer looks well into the colder months.

We start with a simple sleeveless dress:

Then add a layer:

The dress is paired with a Gap staple, the supersoft long sleeved tee with colors that compliment the dress and are fall appropriate.  Remember:  fall is a time for rich, warm colors so indulge in burgundy and wine colors!  The layered long sleeves can look a bit much on their own, but never fear the outfit it never  complete without our fall go-to.

The Black Blazer:

After the Little Black Dress, the Black Blazer is a staple in every woman's wardrobe.  The casualness of the cotton tee and dress off-sets the everyday business appeal of the blazer.

Add a scarf, some glitzy jewelry if your heart desires and enjoy!  For the frigid days add stockings.  User discretion advised however, for extra layering such as stockings and even the long-sleeved shirt, you want to be careful of getting to bulky.  Don't layer chunky knits or thick tights under a dress this style/material (have tights and wondering what to do with them? That post is to come!)  Until next time, fashionistas.

Gap Girl 101

Here at 9402 we've been debating the cuteness, chicness and wearability of the printed, long-sleeved shirt dress pictured below.  What was initially seen as unappealing became quite the standout piece with just a little bit of styling...

First, we belted:

One of the best things about this dress is its print--it has the appearance of wool without the heaviness of the actual fabric, a perfect transition piece as summer dwindles down and we start out fall!  The colors (black, white, grey and a rich neon-green/yellow) are playful, but understated by the classic silhouette of the dress. What this picture does not do justice is the hidden buttons that end at the natural waist leaving a flat skirt and...POCKETS! Always a favorite addition to a dress like this one.

Then we added a sweater:

The 'rich neon-green/yellow' of the sweater brings out the same color in the dress.  This adds more flare to the look and can be worn over the dress to break-up some of the pattern for those who aren't as fond of all over prints. And if the color is much too much...

Always go for black:

The silk-blend black cardigan allows for a quieter look.  This top can also be worn over the dress to dilute the pattern.

Whatever way you wear this look remember: Fit is important!  Make sure you are comfortable with the length of the skirt and the arms.  If you are unsure about sizing always try up and down a size.  Have fun with your outfits!   Accessorize with shoes and jewelry, roll the sleeves up, wear a tank under the dress with the buttons down, etc. Happy shopping!
